Fighting For Residents Of California Everyday

About Eric J. Benink And Vincent D. Slavens

Guided by a singular approach to the practice, we accept challenging cases involving complex and often untested issues of law that will make a difference. Our mission is to protect the rights of taxpayers and ratepayers from the overreaching arm of local and state government and agencies.

When you contact us about a potential local government violation, such as your hard-earned tax dollars not being used as they were intended, we will assess, investigate and, when warranted, pursue and litigate violations of law. With our extensive knowledge and unique experience in complex areas of constitutional tax and fee law, not many attorneys can match our reputation, understanding, passion and professionalism. We have a long history of success for our clients and have earned the respect of our peers. Attorney Benink has been named to the Super Lawyers list from 2014-2019.

What We Do

We have extensive experience challenging government-imposed excessive fees, charges and taxes that violate our State Constitution.    For example, we will challenge issues on behalf of clients, such as:

  • Utility and sewer rates and inequitable utility fees
  • Franchise fees, surcharges and regulatory fees
  • Diversion of fees to general governmental operations
  • Property assessments, hikes and PBIDs (property and business improvement districts)
  • Mello-Roos districts and special taxes

We also work to ensure that government responds to Public Records Act requests to assist clients in exposing government violations.  In addition, we represent clients in cases involving business issues, including investment fraud and business and partnership disputes.

We often take cases on a contingency fee basis, which means we only collect attorney’s fees if we win your case. To find out more about our education, board affiliations, memberships and extensive case histories, click on the links below:
